Work Time Estimates

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

So I’m always thinking I’m going to finish things at work in less time than I actually do.  Part of it is having to install updates. Part of it is legitimate technical/computer hardware and software issues.

And part of it is finding out that the computer I’m on doesn’t have a few files it needs - locating the files - and trying to jury-rig some way to actually get the files onto the computer. It should be a very simple operation.

“Deets”, this one’s for you

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

At lunch my fellow trainees often talk about the challenges we face in our new jobs.  This comic is based on a story by “Deets” whose name has been cleverly disguised to protect his identity.  I think that’s where the swearing came from, too.  Perhaps you’ve suffered from this moment of distraction - maybe you suddenly remembered a name you were trying to think of, or began to identify the things you needed at the store - when you realized you missed the here and now.

Of course, this sort of thing has never happened to me. I’m always perfectly focused on what’s going on around me.

Right.

This is right up there with the dreaded scenario of re-reading an e-mail AFTER you sent it.  Because that’s when you discover glaring errors that make you look bad.  This is just one of the many lunch discussions here at my new job.  Another hot topic? Strategies to keep from falling asleep (or just from looking like you’re asleep) in meetings.

They’re Grrrrrrreeeat!

So … this is a joke about my training program. Maybe one day I will give the URL for this blog to my class-mates and they’ll see it.  I think they suggested a more direct “I really hate so-and-so” blog approach, but that’s just not my style.

I’m just hoping no one tries to figure out who’s who in the “photograph” - because that seems like the kind of thing people would do, and any resemblence to actual people would be purely coincidental.

Learning Curve

Monday, November 17th, 2008

My sister says it will take me a 9 months to a year to feel like I know what I’m doing.  It’s been about 3, and I still feel totally lost.  Hopefully this learning curve isn’t linear or I’m in trouble.

Too Literal

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Sometimes I’m afraid I take things too literally. Then I think about the extremes and I decide, “Nah, you’re still in the range of normal human behaviour.”
